Course Description

An analysis of various aspects of daily life in biblical times to provide focal points that help students understand biblical customs and ways of thought more accurately. The course integrates anthropology, archaeology, and geography to develop a culturally aware approach to reading and interpreting the Bible.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

• demonstrate a reasonably complete understanding of the cultural world of the Bible (society, social and personal identity, forms of subsistence, economy, art forms, religious expression, etc.);
• identify modern practices and customs which are pertinent to understanding biblical practices and customs; and
• display skills in identifying and understanding cultural information that informs biblical texts.

Field Study
